DrupalCamp Dallas 2009

Sessions

Here are some of the sessions that will be presented this year. In addition, there will be Birds of a Feather (BOF) groups. These are informal groups of people that have a common Drupal interest.

Have a BOF idea? sign up for a time slot. Please only sign up for 15 minutes. If you need more time, you can move to a corner of the room and let someone else begin.

Session slides and video (coming soon!) can be viewed by clicking on the title. Enjoy!

NOTE: This session will be co-presented with Nathan Smith of 960 Grid System.

—————

Session goals include gaining a solid understanding of what grid design is, how it has evolved since its early beginnings in print, and how it can help expedite the design and templating process. This session will demonstrate the principles of grid-based theming and the NineSixty theme for Drupal. Subtheming NineSixty for rapid site design and deployment will be covered, as well as creating a custom grid system for any project.

Mastering version control is what enables developers to create more robust projects. It helps to preserve not only your code base, but each incremental step to get there, allowing you to recover old code and revert code you no longer want.

Join Developer Evangelist Chris Koenig for a guided tour of running PHP on Windows. In this talk Chris will explore enhancements to the Windows environment for installing, configuration and running PHP applications as well as explore some of the tools available on the Microsoft platform to the PHP developer.

• Overview of PHP on Windows

For most agencies, the process of effectively creating, deploying and maintaining Web sites is significantly different than it was just a few years ago. This is primarily a result of the maturation of development tools, newly realized business needs and learn-it-the-hard-way management practices.

Drupal provides powerful tools that further alter these processes.  Drupal sites are developed much differently than sites based on other frameworks.

VIEW PRESENTATION

NOTE: This session co-presented with Tom McCracken of LevelTen.

Arrive early on Saturday morning to register, get your coffee, and get a seat for this first session.  Dallas Drupal Group co-leaders Lee Raney and Tom McCracken will share our "Drupal Stories", take a look at the State of Drupal today, and introduce the speakers for the weekend.

It's easy to simply use software and themes downloaded from Drupal.org to speed up your development projects. It's much harder to work with the community and give back in a way that helps Drupal and your own projects. In this presentation, we'll discuss (1) how to follow development of your favorite contributed modules and themes, (2) how to contribute changes back to the projects, (3) general issue queue etiquette, and (4) the most constructive and effective ways to get support when you can't figure out what's wrong or how to use something.

You have the perfect idea for a new website. You perform an exhaustive search of platform solutions and decide Drupal is the best option (of course). You download the software, run through the installer, and you're off the races. A few weeks later, you launch your new site. Life is great, then BOOM! Your website is hacked. What do you do? You enter into a time consuming and costly scramble to recover your dignity.

Getting your first website online can be a daunting task. From domain registration to website setup, this session will take you step by step through the process of deploying a website on Drupal, the world's most popular website building platform. We will cover how websites and web servers work, options for getting a site online and an actual Drupal install. Be sure to come prepared with questions!

Drupal is well-known as the premier platform for community-driven websites; the Ubercart package for Drupal adds eCommerce to the community plumbing.  This session shows how anyone can can build a community around a product or service or otherwise monetize a web presence by walking-through a real-world Drupal Ubercart implementation.

Online leaders are leveraging sophisticated Content Management Systems (CMS) to drive unprecedented online results. The CMS revolution is transforming the future of the web by empowering non-webmasters to manage their content and deploy advanced Web 2.0 features.

In this seminar we will explore an advanced distribution of Drupal, iSite Essentials. Whether you are a business owner, IT or marketing manager, or a web designer, this seminar will give you the foundation you need to deploy your next generation website.
What you will learn:

You've heard about the semantic web — now is the time to start building it! In this session we'll briefly introduce Microformats and RDFa, and explain how they impact the web. We will examine live demos in Drupal 6, and discuss how Drupal 7 will up the ante on publishing semantic content. Knowledge of CCK, Views, Taxonomy, and theming will be helpful.

Drupal is complex. What seems simple to us to can be overwhelming to those unfamiliar with Drupal terminology and concepts. In this session I'll share some of the things I've learned teaching Drupal at the University of North Texas to developers, "dreamweaver" folks, and those with no expierence at all. I'll also touch on my experience handing over projects for clients to maintain.

Forget about writing custom database queries and focus on presenting your content with meaning and style. After a basic introduction to Views you will be guided through real world examples and learn how to quickly serve your audience with some Drupal powered awesomeness.

There are tens of millions of commercial websites, yet only a small percentage drive significant returns. There is an elite minority that are transformational, adding millions to their owners bottom line. Drupal is the ultimate secret weapon for unleashing this potential – with the right strategy.

This session will explore the revolutionary principals, architecture and processes behind an elite web presence. We will build upon many of the other DrupalCamp session to create a strategic framework for transformational success.

Web development and web design have long been siloed into separate skill sets, but for the Drupal theme ninja, both are indispensable. A theme developer understands PHP, $vars manipulation, theme_overrides, and how Drupal content loads dynamically into the page. A themer adds to this an understanding of more traditional design skills, including CSS, grid theory and facility with the necessary graphical tools. Though many come to theming from a design background, there is little reason a developer could not also make the transition.

This session will be a condensed version of Improving Enterprises' Intro to Agile and Scrum publicly available class. A short history of the agile movement and a survey of the essential elements of agile will be followed by a look at the process, artifacts, and roles in Scrum. This session is intended to introduce attendees to agile and Scrum, as well as start conversations and power breakout sessions on specific topics.

VIEW PRESENTATION

If you are evaluating Drupal for a website project, this session is for you!  An objective comparison with other CMS solutions such as Wordpress and Joomla, and some things to look for in a CMS with emphasis on how Drupal does them. We'll talk about the Drupal community, Drupal resources, and you will see an overview of what Drupal has to offer, including the "Top Web 2.0 Drupal Modules."

The power and flexibility of Drupal's taxonomy (classification) system is one thing that sets it apart from other CMSs. Yet many Drupal builders fail to fully harness what Drupal gives them in taxonomy. This session will help you get the most from it.

Session Overview:

This session covers Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Drupal 6: Which modules you'll need, how to configure them, and what more you can do to get your site to the top of Google.
